Dr Gerard Lyons is an expert on the world economy, international financial systems, macroeconomic policy and global markets in his role as Chief Economist and Group Head of Global Research at Standard Chartered. He is also an Economic Advisor to the Board and is a member of the Bank’s Executive Forum.
Gerard Lyons has twenty years experience in senior roles with some of the world's leading financial institutions and as a highly regarded City and international economist with an excellent forecasting record. Previous positions include Chief Economist at DKB International and consultant to the Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, Chief UK Economist at Swiss Bank Corporation,beginning his career with Chase Manhattan. His PhD from the University of London is on "Testing the efficiency of financial futures markets".
Gerard Lyons is a Committee Member of the Hong Kong Association, a Council Member of the University of Warwick, on the International Committee of the Bretton Woods Committee, a Council Member of the No Campaign, is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is heavily involved with Asia House and the Japan Society. In recent years he has also held other positions such as Chair of the Steering Committee of the Asia Study Group at the Royal Institute for International Affairs, was on the Committee at the Centre for Economic
Policy Research and was a Council Member of the Society of Business Economists for twelve years. In 2006 he was the UK Co-Chair of the UK-Hong Kong Business Partnership.
He enjoys excellent relations with the UK and international media and is Sky TV's regular commentator or major economic events. He has published widely on economic and financial issues and is invited frequently to speak at conferences and address audiences around the world. He testified to the US Senate Banking Committee on Sovereign Wealth Funds, spoke at the Brookings Institute in Washington, spoke on China at the Institute of International
Finance’s Spring meeting, about emerging markets to the annual International Monetary Conference in Cape Town, gave a key note address on Asia to the American Bankers’Federation (BAFT), and has spoken at major conferences in Doha and Dubai and at numerous other international events.
Over the years, Lyons has testified to UK Parliamentary Committees and spoken at the EU-China Summit in Beijing on financial issues and has presented a paper on financial inclusion and Microfinance to the Commonwealth Finance Ministers for each of the last two years.
