Sérgio Abranches, Ph.D., political scientist and political risk analyst, is an independent researcher on Ecopolitics, the relationship between economic development, societal progress and the environment, with an emphasis on climate change and the Amazon. In addition to his work on ecopolitics Sérgio Abranches has been a consultant on political risk analysis, with a focus on Brazil and South America; and also on future trends and scenario analysis.  Among his past and present clients for political risk are institutions such as Bank of Boston, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, Crédit Suisse, Citibank, Schroders, Deutsch Bank, JP Morgan, CSFirst Boston, and UBS. Among his past and present clients for future trends and scenarios are corporations and foundations such as: Arco Oil, Ipiranga Oil,  Refripar (Electrolux), Avina Foundation, Hewlett Foundation.

Sérgio Abranches is the author of numerous academic articles, published in Brazil and the United States, on comparative politics. He has a daily op-ed commentary on the Brazilian all-news radio network CBN. With the support of Avina and Hewlett Foundations, he co-founded O Eco an environmental news agency dedicated to training young journalists to report on environmental subjects, and to facilitate the dialogue between scientists and journalists. He writes an op-ed column published by O Eco and reproduced in several Brazilian and global sites and publications. His work on the Muriquis (Brazilian spidermonkeys), primates of the Atlantic rainforest, was awarded the SOS Mata Atlântica prize for environmental journalism.

Sérgio Abranches is presently visiting professor of the School of International Business of the COPPEAD Institute for Administration of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, listed as one of the 100 best World’s MBA by the Financial Times, where he teaches graduate courses on “political risk analysis” and “sustainability and corporate responsibility”.
